I had planned to update this transition blog much sooner, but I have had much more work than usual, with several other Serbia-related pieces to write along with interviews. There are several pieces of media already out. You can read my first election dispatch for UnHerd and some of my thoughts in BBC Russian. I also have done a longform interview on events in Serbia with Mark Ames over at Radio War Nerd. Much more is coming in the next few weeks.
I’m also struggling to keep up with the pace of change. Everything is moving very quickly here. There’s even an excellent new website chronicling the resignations and arrests of Serbian officials that updates every half hour. It allows you to see transitional justice unfold in live time.
Commemoration
Yesterday, I attended the two-year anniversary commemoration of the train station canopy collapse in Novi Sad. It was solemn and touching. The refusal to accept that life is cheap, that these things just happen, that shoddy construction is a fact of life, was all very powerful. It was also well attended despite bad weather. According to Reuters, tens of thousands of people were there to show their respects to the sixteen lives lost in the tragic collapse of the recently renovated canopy on November 1, 2024.
